Fake fur dog coats. Huh?

July
24

Dogs have fur, last I checked right? I mean, OK, I understand that in the cold some dogs do need extra protection, hence the dog coat industry. For instance, my aunt and uncle’s greyhound rescue needs one in the Boston winter. But this?! This is just, well, fill in the blank….

Do you think this dog would be happy knowing he was wearing another animal? And does it go in the snow wearing mink!

Anyway, if you have the bucks, well, my motto has always been, money doesn’t buy you good taste, just expensive fabric.

But this, this is just absurd.

I think there’s a reason this pup looks displeased. Sigh.

Two-footers, owners and wheelers welcome

July
23

I gotta say, this sounds like a blast. We get a lot of news about fundraisers here at LoHud and P&C, but this one shows some real innovation! It’s an event for the new Yonkers Animal Shelter. Check it out:

3rd World MC, Toolbox Tattooz and Building Hope will host “Cause for Paws,” a poker run and barbeque fundraiser for the new Yonkers Animal Shelter, Aug. 9 (rain date Aug. 13) from 11 a.m. to dusk at the JFK Marina on Warburton Avenue.
Walkers (including those with paws on leashes) are welcome, as are car drivers. Admission for those participants is $10. Motorcyle riders pay $20, or $25 with a passanger.
Prizes for best hand include gas cards, a leather motorcyle vest, tattoo, helmet and more. The final event at the marina will also include live bands and food, and an appearance by Kristy Morgan, winner of MTV’s “Tila Tequila’s Shot At Love.”
Registration is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Toolbox Tattooz, 32 Yonkers Ave., where participants pick up their first poker card. They then proceed to pick up cards at Yonkers Mini Mart, 750 Yonkers Ave.; Rory Dolan’s restaurant, 890 McLean Ave.; the entrance to Tibbetts Brook Park, then the marina.
All proceeds go to the animal shelter.
For more information and the exact route, call 914-320-6751 or 914-943-0944.

About this blog
For most animal lovers, pets are members of the family. They carry around pictures in their wallets and schedule vacations with pets in mind. This blog takes a look into the world of a pet owner: the good, the bad and the just plain obsessive.

About the author
Laurel Babcock is the Community Life editor for The Journal News, Express Publications and LoHud.com. She grew up with a beloved mutt and was surrounded by dogs into young adulthood. She liked cats enough, but didn't really think of them as true pets. That changed when her brother brought an abandoned 4-week-old kitty into the family, dooming us all. Laurel currently serves as staff for two completely adored cats, Stanley and Cup, both girls.
