Baby red panda….does not get cuter

July
30

One of my oldest stuffed animals from childhood is a panda (the regular kind). My mom doesn’t even remember where it came from, it’s just always been there and it stoked my early and lifelong interest in this fabulous animal.
So, if you haven’t seen this yet (hey, I’m late, I know….thanks patient P&C people) take a peep at this girl…Oh, if I had a big house, on a farm, with a panda caretaker….I give you, Sha-lei.

Yes, the babe will be massive someday, but so what. More pics and story after the, yes, jump…

The Edmonton Valley Zoo in Alberta, Canada, welcomed the birth of a rare Styan’s red panda cub on June 13. The baby, a female named Sha-lei, is healthy and “doing everything she’s supposed to do at her age,” animal health technologist Sandy Heiliker told the Edmonton Sun.

Heiliker is shouldering most of the work of raising Sha-lei, who was removed from her mother’s care shortly after birth. (Sha-lei was taken from her mother for safety reasons, the zoo reports, over fears that the mother was too aggressive in her cleaning of the baby and could potentially harm her.)

(Me here, sorry,…argh, mothers! Sorry mommy!)

Styan’s red pandas are one of two subspecies of red panda; they’re slightly larger than the more familiar western red panda. Both subspecies are native to the Himalayan region of Asia, and both are endangered, due primarily to deforestation.

P.S. credit be given to LA Times for what you just read. See, I’m a nice and fair blogger.
