The place for pets, and their owners

Looking for homes…

March
2

I’ve been remiss of late in putting out the call for adoptions, so here’s a few guys and gals that could use a home. Pics first, then info after the jump.

First up, Sammy (no, he’s not deformed, there’s a reason he has such strong mitts!):

Now cute little Dutch:

And Sophia and Blanche:

Sammy is a Norwegian forest cat mix who was found wandering from house to house begging for scraps. Descended from the cats that went to sea with the Vikings, his ancestors had long powerful legs and large claws that enabled them to climb rocks and trees. Sammy is a very large (about 25 pounds), well-behaved boy, gets along with other cats and is healthy except for having FIV antibodies. He can live a long and very healthy life with proper care, but he should be an only cat or live in a household with other FIV-positive cats. He is about 2 years old, has been neutered, micro-chipped and had all of his appropriate immunizations. His adoption fee is $95. To adopt Sammy, call 845-528-0015 or visit www.putnamfelines.org.

Dutch is a handsome, happy pup who is a young beagle/pit bull mix. He is less than 1 year old and has lots of cute enthusiasm. Dutch loves people, but is not a fan of cats or other dogs, so he needs to be the only pet. Living with older children, whom he can’t knock over with his exuberance, would be best. He will need someone who will exercise him daily and take him to obedience training. Dutch is neutered and current with his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $125. To adopt Dutch, visit the Putnam Humane Society from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Sunday at Old Route 6, Carmel. Call 845-225-7777 or visit www.puthumane.org.

Also, at the Putnam Humane Society, Sophia and Blanche are 14-year-old sisters who were left in a lot. They were found in a box with a note attached giving their information. They are sweet senior citizens who are in need of a family to love them in their golden years. They are both black and white. Sophia is a domestic short-haired kitty, and Blanche has long hair, which has been cut due to matting.

For most animal lovers, pets are members of the family. They carry around pictures in their wallets and schedule vacations with pets in mind. This blog takes a look into the world of a pet owner: the good, the bad and the just plain obsessive.

Laurel Babcock is the Community Life editor for The Journal News, Express Publications and LoHud.com. She grew up with a beloved mutt and was surrounded by dogs into young adulthood. She liked cats enough, but didn't really think of them as true pets. That changed when her brother brought an abandoned 4-week-old kitty into the family, dooming us all. Laurel currently serves as staff for two completely adored cats, Stanley and Cup, both girls.
