We often get requests/complaints here at the paper to cover less bad news and more good news. Well, news is what news is most days, but here’s some good news courtesy of the Katonah-Lewisboro school district, on behalf of the SPCA of Westchester. Good going kids!
John Jay middle and high school students are doing their part to help the the SPCA of Westchester in Briarcliff Manor.
Seventh-graders Jessica Stewart, Aislinn Driscoll, Briona Saas, Hanna Sfreddo, Ariana Geller and Petrit Kendezi recently baked dog treats to give to the dogs for Valentine’s Day, and members of the high school art club are creating a mural for the shelter.
Under the supervision of home and careers teachers Jeanne Carter, the middle school students hope to be involved in other projects for the animals.
“It felt really good to make these treats for dogs who don’t have a home and who don’t get a lot of love,” Stewart said.
Art club officer Tess Feigenbaum is leading the creative crew designing and developing the triptych mural, made of three large panels that inlcude the shelter’s name and pictures of animals. The tile mosaic is being created by Rose Albano, Lauren Batten, Daisy Bilenkin, Sam Blake, Milena Czaczkowska, Jennifer Dingee, Tess Feigenbaum, Ryan Fischer, Brian Lilly, Ariel Low, Kristen Low, Sarah MacKenna, Evan Mattson, Derek Racine, Christopher Sawyer, Megan Schreier, Kristen Schuetz, Rebecca Silverberg and Amy Winter.
The club meets for about an hour after school every Tuesday afternoon to create the work. It will be finished this spring.
“We can’t wait to see the mural and will hang their artwork up proudly,” said Lisa Bonanno, an SPCA development associate. “Beautifying the shelter is truly a wonderful way to help the animals because it makes the atmosphere more inviting to the public when they come here to consider adoption. It also helps the employees and volunteers to find more animals homes when working in a bright, cheery facility, so thank you.”
