The place for pets, and their owners

Vote for Boo, the best pet partner

January
28

About a year ago, The Journal New did a story about Lisa Edwards and her pet therapy dog Boo, who visits with special needs children in Mahopac and retired Maryknoll sisters in Ossining, among other good deeds. This is Lisa and Boo doing their work.Well now, for all his work in making people happy, Boo is up for an award, and I want you all to vote for him. You can get a better look in a video and vote for him here. And do read his story as written to me by Lisa, after the jump. It’s pretty inspiring. See, Boo had to overcome some disabilities, too.

The Beyond Limits Award offered by the Delta Society is an annual award for outstanding Pet Partners recognizing their contributions to their community and furthering awareness of Animal Assisted Therapy, Activities and Education.

Boo is one of five finalists out of hundreds of national nominations for this award. In an ironic way Boo is a beacon of hope for dogs and humans alike as he himself struggled with special needs to train and finally pass his Delta evaluation to become a Pet Partner.

Boo has taught many children that we all have strengths and weaknesses and with some persistence and patience we can all find our niche. And Boo’s niche is making a difference in the lives of the folks he visits.

Laurel Babcock is the Community Life editor for The Journal News, Express Publications and LoHud.com. She grew up with a beloved mutt and was surrounded by dogs into young adulthood. She liked cats enough, but didn't really think of them as true pets. That changed when her brother brought an abandoned 4-week-old kitty into the family, dooming us all. Laurel currently serves as staff for two completely adored cats, Stanley and Cup, both girls.
