Stanley says goodbye to Sam (for Rangers fans)

January
31

Obviously, from the names of my cats, you get that I’m a hockey fan. But what I really am is a Rangers fan, which longtime P&C readers know from my very first post.

I linked you then to my (now former) colleague and friend Sam Weinman’s Rangers Report blog here on LoHud. Well, to my great sadness, Sam has left us to be a senior editor for the Web site at Golf Digest. Here is Stanley reacting to the news…what?!?! Read more of this entry »

Two stories, Kleenex-worthy in a happy way

January
31

Got this e-mail from Mary, a reader, who asked that I share this story. It’s written in the voice of a dog who was adopted at a shelter. I loved it.

After reading it, make sure you read Mary’s story after the jump about how she came to adopt Charley, pictured here. Can you just imagine the kisses this guy gives! Thanks Mary (hope you don’t mind my sharing your story, too). Read more of this entry »

A howling good time

January
31

I still haven’t gotten to the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, darn it, and I really need to for the evening howls while it’s winter. Even though I haven’t been, I highly recommend it. This here is the center’s prized ambassdor (and don’t he know it!) Apache, enjoying a howl and looking gorgeous at sunset.

Stanley and Bruce

January
30

So, as I said in the earlier post, I’m sitting at the computer last night watching the video portion of my hero’s new album, and I swear, Stanley starts coming around and looking at it like, “what the?”I swear I am not making this up. What’s odd, is that it’s not like she’s never heard Bruce in my house (hardly!)….Apparently, she just really dug this song.

Notice how, in this pic, nothing deters Cup from her kibble. And I just noticed that thank heavens the litter box is empty in the first pic. That would have been a buzzkill.

Working on a Dream

January

What does this bad downloaded pic of Bruce Springsteen have to do with P&C you ask? Well, kind of nothing, except I’ll show you Stanley and Cup’s reaction to the new CD tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ve shown you by bias. C’mon!!

Vote for Boo, the best pet partner

January
28

About a year ago, The Journal New did a story about Lisa Edwards and her pet therapy dog Boo, who visits with special needs children in Mahopac and retired Maryknoll sisters in Ossining, among other good deeds. This is Lisa and Boo doing their work.Well now, for all his work in making people happy, Boo is up for an award, and I want you all to vote for him. You can get a better look in a video and vote for him here. And do read his story as written to me by Lisa, after the jump. It’s pretty inspiring. See, Boo had to overcome some disabilities, too. Crazy kitty tales, and a freaked out mom

January
27

Wow, I am both hysterical and horrified by this tale, as shared by my colleague Nancy Cutler on our Rockland opinion blog. She posted this tidbit this morning:

Housework is dangerous
OK, it’s not dangerous to me, but it is to my cat.
Last night, I was loading the dishwasher when I got distracted and turned away. I then promptly squeezed in the detergent, shut the door and pressed the magic button. I heard a thump, thump, thump. A dish out of alignment? A stray spoon?
I opened the door to fix whatever was out of place, and our 7ish-month-old kitten, Alex, came flying out at about 60 mph.
Yes, I washed my cat in the dishwasher.
She is fine (she got her head stuck this morning exploring a glass of orange juice, so she seems no worse for the wear, nor any brighter.)
I, however, am traumatized.
Is there a lesson there? Probably for Alex, but I don’t think she’ll learn it until she’s graduated from kittenhood. Until then, I will look in the dishwasher, oven, fridge (yes, she has) etc. before I shut them.

One thing Nancy didn’t mention: Alex also got into a bit of breathing trouble because he got his head stuck in a bag of doritos. Yes, that is correct.
So readers…is this the stupidest cat ever? Most adventerous, but still dumb? I’ve never heard of a masochistic kitty before, but in this case…..whichever, he sure is fodder for great stories!
Send a pic Nancy, we have got to see this cat!

K-9 dogs and 9/11

January
27

I adore K-9 dogs, adore them, the ones that are specially-trained to work with cops and rescue units. And here’s a great opportunity for the whole family to learn all about them and bark out your thanks.

An alert colleague fowarded this e-mail to me about event at the Tribute WTC Visitor Center in Manhattan… Read more of this entry »

About this blog
For most animal lovers, pets are members of the family. They carry around pictures in their wallets and schedule vacations with pets in mind. This blog takes a look into the world of a pet owner: the good, the bad and the just plain obsessive.

About the author
Laurel Babcock is the Community Life editor for The Journal News, Express Publications and LoHud.com. She grew up with a beloved mutt and was surrounded by dogs into young adulthood. She liked cats enough, but didn't really think of them as true pets. That changed when her brother brought an abandoned 4-week-old kitty into the family, dooming us all. Laurel currently serves as staff for two completely adored cats, Stanley and Cup, both girls.
