Less than one month away, more than 2,600 dogs will compete for the title of Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, scheduled for Feb. 11 and 12 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
According to a press release issued by NBC Universal, there will be four new dogs in this year’s competition:
Plott (Hound Group)
Beauceron (Herding Group)
Tibetan Mastiff (Working Group)
Swedish Vallhund (Herding Group)

Some other stats from NBC Universal:
• There are more Labrador retrievers entered this year — 51 — than any other breed.
• The dogs represent 48 states, the District of Columbia and at least six foreign countries.
• The states with the largest number of entries are California with 287 and New York with 244.
I will reiterate my hope from last year that we see some new breeds winning the group categories. In years past we’ve seen numerous poodles (toy and standard), Pekingeses, huskies and curly-coated terriers. Yawn.
Of course, I am a little bitter because you rarely see a sighthound make it to the Best in Show category and my personal favorite, the Italian Greyhound, never seems to do well in the Toy Group.
Who knows? Maybe one of these new breeds will come blow away the rest of the traditional competition.
The Westminster show will air on the USA Network.
