This time of year can bum out your pet

When I was in high school my mom and I used to joke about how our greyhound, Kasey, would bark and nip at my car keys and my backside when I’d get ready to leave in the morning.

Turns out, Kasey wasn’t alone. An article on MSNBC.com quotes experts that say pets really do feel sadness when their favorite kids head back to school or off to college.

The article quoted animal behaviorist Mary Lee Nitschke, a professor at Linfield College in Portland, Ore., who suggested making sure dogs get plenty of exercise.

A good point. Many animal behaviorists will tell you that a tired dog is a good dog. My own dogs get walked every morning before I go to work and sometimes get toys thrown for them as well. Usually by the time I’m ready to go they are eager to take their places on the couch and dog beds.
