Dogfighting, pitbulls and Michael Vick

July
30

I’ve been holding a bit on blogging about this until after Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick went to court last week on dog fighting charges.  He pleaded not guilty.

Now today a co-defendant, Tony Taylor, pleaded guilty to several charges relating to a dog fighting ring. For more details read this  MNSBC.com story.

The Atlanta Falcons have already banned Vick from training camp not long after allegations came out that he not only participated in the underground “sport” (and I use that term with the utmost disgust) but that he participated in the killing of dogs that didn’t perform to his standards.

Most of the dogs out there involved in fighting are pit bulls and this whole Michael Vick brouhaha is not helping the image of dogs who, when properly trained, are loving, obedient and good with children.

I certainly hope that LoHud families that own pit bulls will speak up here and tell me about their dogs so that others can see they are not snarling beasts ready and waiting to attack anything that moves.

It is the HUMANS that make dogs like this. They could turn Lassie (collie,) Pongo (dalmatian) or Snoopy (beagle) into fighting machines if they wished.

The dogs used for fighting are kept in horrific conditions, the females are tied up to be raped, and the dogs killed by gruesome measures. And the “winners” bring in a hefty purse for the owners.

In the Vick case, it was alleged the dogs were killed by strangulation and by repeatedly smashing the dog’s body into the ground.

And it’s not just the fighting dogs that suffer. I volunteer and socialize with members of the Italian Greyhound Club of America and one woman I know took in a rescue that had been used as “bait.”

When my own dogs were in obedience training I met a woman whose rescued pit-bull worked as a therapy dog. Penny would visit a home for troubled teens and they would pet her, brush her and walk her.

Not only would those teens get lessons on how to treat a dog, the owner told me then, they would understand that pit bulls are not meant to be mean and that they aren’t meant for fighting.

Don’t get me wrong. They are powerful and, just like any dog, you need to put time and effort into training them.

So let’s go, LoHudders! I want to hear your thoughts on Vick, dog fighting and pit bulls.

I totally agree with you. I am an Atlanta resident and a Falcon fan and I am simply disgusted and appalled at what Michael Vick has chosen to do with his millions. It is so cruel that anyone would do this to a loving, loyal dog that I have been upset about this for weeks now. It breaks my heart.

After Katrina, I volunteered at a shelter in New Orleans, and I handled many pitbulls. Some had obviously been abused. Not ONE of those pit bulls were agressive towards ME nor any animals there. One female in particular had obviously been abused, her legs were deformed likely by a beating and had not been treated. She still walked around best she could, and she was the most loving dog. Everytime I came to her cage, she would roll over on her belly for me to rub her.

I am so sick of hearing about people condemning pit bulls. It’s NOT the dog, it is the owners who sadistically mistreat these animals and abuse them to turn them into to fighters that should be condemned. Dogs, as well all know, will do anything to gain the approval of their owners. These poor animals had no choice, and it has been said that Michael Vick and his cohorts sadistically killed the ones who had been abused and tortured and still would NOT fight.
    It breaks my heart.

He needs to pay for this, and jail time and a fine is not enough. I will never fogive him and will hate him for the rest of my life.

  2. JACQUE

i FOUND THIS BLOG WHILE SEARCHING FOR A PITBULL RESCUE GROUP. yESTERDAY THE HUMANE SOCIETY IN MY AREA PICKED UP A SWEET LITTLE MALE PITBULL ABOUT 4 TO 6 MONTHS OLD. I ENQUIRED AS TO WHEN HE COULD BE ADOPTED AND THEY SAID THEY DON’T ADOPT OUT PITBULLS. CAN ANYONE DIRECT ME TO SOME CLOSE O ME TO HELP?

  3. terrence

I Dont condon dog fighting by any means.. but whats the difference in cock fighting, or hunting .. no one screaming at white people for going out shooting innocent animals for sport. the bottom line is this is about race. dog fighting is a sport down south. the same way cock fighting is for mexicans, and hunting is for white people.

  4. Robert

Okay, this is what I don’t understand. Why are some many people( like Terrance) quick to say they don’t condone dog fighting but then act as though there is nothing wrong with it, or even worse, that its a race issue. Give me a break! Okay, Terrance, would you like to know why Mr. Michael Vivk is going to the slammer and not the “white people that hunt”, to use your words? Because dog fighting IS ILLEGAL!!!!! If hunting became illegal, which it is if you hunt out of season, then those that hunt iiegally should be punished. This is not a black or white issue, it has to do with BREAKING THE LAW. My God we have such a long way to go. I guess the laws don’t matter if your black. Grow up Terrance.

  5. Kristin

This is for Jacque. Go to http://www.pbrc.net/ and there are adoptions available for every pitbull you can imagine. Owning 2 pitbulls myself, I am discusted that someone would ever treat an innocent dog this way!!!! I would never own anything other then my pitbulls or the pitbull breed. My dogs are the most loyal and loving dogs that I could ever ask for. I have an 8 month old son and they will just lay on the floor next to him and they both sleep in his room next to the crib and alert me if he is waking up or making noises. My son was also 2 months premature and if my dogs weren’t so attentive to him, I wouldn’t have got most of the sleep that I got because of them. I never went to bed scared to fall asleep because I knew my dogs would come get me if something wasn’t right. So how about we put Michael Vick (and I would do it if he was WHITE!) in a pen with an aggressive dog and let the dog take a toll on his ass… Maybe even put a dog in there that he trained… and he should be ripped apart at the neck and all over his body, then maybe he will have some remorse for what he has done to these animals. He is a disgrace to our country and should be punished as so… Him and his accomplises are the Al Quada to the pitbull breed and he should be punished as so…. Doing these things should be catorgorized as MURDER or Attempted MURDER!!! I am sick with this!!! And he played football and is supposed to be an adult rolemodel to children… SICK!

  6. Kristin

    For TERRENCE!!!!!

    YOUR AN IDIOT… AND UNEDUCATED…

Hunting is not illegal and you idiot how are we supposed to eat if we don’t kill animals. We aren’t going out killing animals that are endangered and if there was no hunting there would be too many animals out there… Hunting has been part of our life since before time. So your stupid on that issue…

Second cock fighting are you kidding me… seriously… maybe it happens in mexico… but I have never seen on the news time and time again things about cock fighting as I do daily & weekly about dog fighting… and cock fighting and people caught doing it should be punished!!!!

DOG FIGHTING IS NOT NOT NOT A SPORT… AND IF YOU THINK IT IS YOU CAN BE CATAGORIZED AS A MONSTER WITH THE REST OF THEM CAUSE YOUR JUST AS BAD IN MY BOOK…

THERE WILL COME A JUDGEMENT DAY… SO MAYBE YOU SHOULD LEARN THAT GOD DIDNT DIVIDE ANYONE IN COLORS…NOR DID HE MAKEE IT SO PEOPLE FOUGHT ANY ANIMAL… OUR GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE MORE CONCERNED WITH THE HEARTLESS, NIEVE, DISTRUCTIVE PEOPLE IN OUR COUNTRY (AS YOURSELF) THEN BEING OVERSEAS… WE NEED TO FIX OUR COUNTRY FIRST…

MAYBE IF YOU OWNED AN ANIMAL SUCH AS A PIT AND LOVED THEM AS YOUR OWN CHILD LIKE MOST PEOPLE DO WHEN THEY OWN ANIMALS… MAYBE THEN YOU WOULDN’T LIVE IN SUCH A SHELTERED WORLD OF HATRED AND RACE DISCRIMINATION… YOU WOULD BE A MORE LOVING AND WARM PERSON INSIDE…

I WOULDN’T CARE IF MICHAEL VICK WAS WHITE, BLACK,PINK, BLUE, CATHOLIC, BAPTIST, JEWISH, POLISH, MEXICAN…. HE IS WRONG AND HE CAN BURN IN HELL FOR ALL I CARE…

  7. Frances

First off i just want to say i like many was just truly sickened and saddened by what Michael vick did….i used to fear pits…i was just like many people that didn’t know the breed…i was scared of them…BUT i had friends who had them and i feel in love with them and now i own the most adorable sweet baby pitty, in fact she is sweeter and more gentle with my godson than my 2 year old golden retriever is. i don’t know what is about people epically Terrence who make this out to be a racial issue…however i think your an idiot because what your doing is like comparing Silver to grapes…they have nothing in common….not hunting…your kidding the freaking Indians hunted back in the day to survive…..and like many have said hunting isn’t illegal and you have to have a license and a permit to hunt….but dog fighting is just cruel in so many ways….just the thought of it makes me sick….I pray every night that those poor dogs understand it wasn’t their fault…and that Michael vick rots in hell like Kristin said…we should make him pay just the way he did his dogs…through torture…although we should make him survive it and than not treat his wounds and through him in a jail cell and make him suffer and die slowly…cruel yes…but he deserves it….i don’t know how someone who is suppose to be a role model can be such a disgrace to man kind….

my heart breaks and hurts for the poor pittys…i pray they get re trained and adopted out to good families….

  8. Maryann

    Terrence
I agree with the statement Kristin made: you are an idiot and uneducated! It always amazes me how people try to turn everything racial. This is an issue of a man abusing animals. For what he has done NFL should ban him from football, he gave up his right to represent any NFL team and represent any products. He should be sent to jail for a very long time!

    Hi,

In light of the Michael Vick stuff, I am especially pleased to share this with others! As personally satisfying as it would be to spay and neuter Michael Vick (with no anesthesia), our goal is not to dwell on Vick and the evils of dog fighting, but to teach people how animals SHOULD BE TREATED, and what a blessing they are. Thanks for reading it and passing it on if it interests you. If it doesn’t, I apologize. ~ Nancy Cronk at www.Animal Chaplains.com.
    Press Release August 22, 2007

“Animal Chaplains To Honor and Bless All Creatures on World Animal Day”

~ from the Interfaith Association of Animal Clergy

In what will look like a scene from the popular family movie, “Evan Almighty”, scores of Animal Chaplains around the world will bless hundreds, perhaps thousands of animals in many different settings on October 4th 2007. At a pet cemetery on the east coast, to a city park in the desert, to a sandy beach on the west coast, they will walk in on a leash, fly in on a harness, and slither in their cages. Barking, mewing, bleating, mooing, whinnying and purring will join human voices in hymns of praise and worship.

That day is World Animal Day, a day dedicated to honoring, blessing, and protecting animals all over the world. World Animal Day was founded at an ecologist’s convention in Florence, Italy in 1931 as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. October 4th was chosen as World Animal Day because it is also the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, a Catholic Church holiday which is often celebrated with an annual “blessing of the pets”. Since then, it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and has been widely celebrated around the world. Churches and synagogues in many faiths traditions have adopted “Pet Blessing Day” or “World Animal Day” in increasing numbers every year.

The Interfaith Association of Animal Chaplains prepares for World Animal Day by referring its members and visitors to the official World Animal Day website. The site provides ideas and resources to individuals, families, community groups and congregations everywhere. People can post their pledge for volunteering at a World Animal Day event. In addition to blessing pets, volunteers will work at animal shelters, zoos, rescues, and other nonprofit organizations. Dogs will be walked, cats will be brushed, horses will be groomed, and fish will benefit from freshly cleaned tanks. Donations will be given to animal welfare agencies, and pets will be adopted. School children will collect pet food to be donated to charities, and bake sales and car washes will be held as fundraising events. Veterinary clinics will hold free spay and neuter days, or may offer to vaccinate pets at no charge. All over the world, on the very same day, the well-being of animals will be on the minds of millions of people.

Interfaith Chaplain Nancy Cronk feels a day honoring animals is very important at a time when the headlines speak of animal cruelty such as athlete Michael Vick’s alleged ties to illegal dog fighting. Animal Chaplains would like everyone to know that every major faith endorses the responsible stewardship of the earth and all of its creatures. “Deliberate harming of animals is in direct opposition to teachings in all of the major world faiths. Caring for animals is our global spiritual responsibility. If we can teach this ethic to all of our children, animal abuse and suffering will someday become a distant memory”.

I watched Vick’s public apology with my little son who USED TO wear Michael Vick jerseys to school. It is disturbing to think a certain percentage of the population is honestly going to be swayed by Michael Vick’s “enlightenment” carefully crafted by his overpaid attorneys. Call me a cynic, but I don’t believe a man who has been allegedly torturing animals since childhood coincidentally has a religious epiphany as a result of getting caught and losing his job. I hope I am wrong.

If there is anything good about the Michael Vick story, it is that there is an emerging increased awareness about animal cruelty and animal fighting. There is so much anger about this issue. If we channel it into a positive direction, hopefully, something good can come of it. However…

I think it is a sad commentary that we, as a culture, are using the Vick story to compare “What’s worse?” “What’s worse”, we ask, “carelessly fathering illegitimate children, or dogfighting?”. “Dogfighting or gambling?” “Dogfighting or rape?” “Dogfighting or racism?” “Dogfighting or hateful nationalism?” “Dogfighting or (fill in the blank)....?” The comparisons to dogfighting have been endless.

Dogfighting is one more piece of evidence our country is in need of a spiritual transformation (please note I said spiritual and not necessarily religious). Animals are sentient beings – they feel pain, and they suffer, just like we do. They are not more important, or less important than human beings, but like human beings, they are important, too.

Dogfighting pits one dog against another until one of them dies. The survivor gets his flesh torn off, ears ripped off, eyes pulled out, etc., and the reward for being “a winner” is to writhe in pain until the next fight. Enough said. The pictures make my flesh crawl. The losers are tortured, beaten, starved, electrocuted or drowned. For what? Because these poor creatures were unlucky enough to be born a dog!

Every major faith teaches its followers to be responsible stewards of animals and the Earth. Please help us get the word out that caring for animals, just like caring for people, is an important part of just being a decent person and citizen. If we make this a priority, there will be no more dogfighting horror stories, and no more pointless comparisons of evils. Let us all rise, together, to be better people than we are today, shall we?

Dog fighting happens everyday, virginia is notorious for dog fighting. No one really cares about dog fighting, or dead dogs. Go enlist in the military or fight for something worth fighting for. At this very moment in time someone someone is straping bottles to a cat, getting their dog high, kicking their pet, or throwing their pet of some stairs. Is dog fighting right? Sitting behind a computer being a coward isnt. Blogg, blogg, and stay in the shadows of your home because their internet words shelter your faces. No one really cares about fighting dogs, sorry.

  12. alan

Who made vick a role model? Which one of you bought his crap for your kids. Who taught you people to place someone who can throw a football on pedestal. “He is supposed to be a role model”, why? I guess Elton John is supposed to be a role model too, even though depending on what day it is gay’s are immoral right?

  13. Kristin

Alan… if you dont care about blogging, then why are you? Seriously? I do agree with you that right now there is someone out there getting their dog drunk, high, beating it, etc… and I am with you on that one. But being a pitbull owner, it really upsets me that I have to tattoo my dog to be able to have it and now there is talk about outlawing pits and totally getting rid of the breed… But how is that going to help? They (as in people who fight dogs) will start to torture other breeds and get them fighting… This is a revolving door and a fight that is going to go on forever… because if its not pits, its going to be some other breed of dog… What is upsetting is that I love my dogs, they are like my children, and I cherish them… and to think that there is someone out there drowning, shooting, beating til death, doing all these things to a dog because it couldn’t win a fight… that is not fair and it makes me sick to my stomach.

And your thing on who made Michael Vick a role model? Society does… He is on tv, ads, etc… So society makes him a role model for children and adolescents. Maybe Elton John is a role model to people and being GAY isn’t an issue. But I am an adult myself and I would like to uphold my self in such a manner that I am doing the right thing in front of children. We are all role models, some of us are blue collar workers, some are white collar, some of us are on state aid, and some of us are making millions playing sports, singing music… etc… Doesn’t matter what you do in life. You should hold yourself on a pedestool and make sure you are making good decisions. So if you don’t like blogging, then don’t come to these websites… plain and simple!!!

I currently own a Blue Pit Bull who I love and adore.I call him Blue print This is my 4th Pit and I LOVE HIM.He’s apart of my family .. I owned my first Pit ,Rocky at 12 years old.. One day while me and cousin were walking Rocky we bumped into another group of 12 years old who ran over to us and said “Do You Wanna Fight our Dogs?

Of course I said NO..This was my family pet and I loved him. Rocky spotted the other dog and began to bark and growl, soon enough my 12 year old arms couldn’t hold him. He ran over to the other dog and they went at it.. INSTINCTIVLY!!
Did I want him to fight?? NO!!! But thats what they do..It was natural,I never fought my dog..He wanted to fight, just as he would want to hump a female dog.

I dont condone dog fighting but WHY ARE WE SO QUICK TO TREAT MIKE VICK WORST THEN A DOG?? Shouldnt we consider his family, his friends and all the people who need him?
Okay, its illegal. So is smoking weed, so is drinking under 21,so is J Walking,so is downloading music for free.. Its ILLegal To Play Poker For Cash at home.. SO WHAT!!! How many of us still do these thing? Its illegal for girls in GA to publicly show their thongs. Do we want to persecute them?
Should any of you be fired from your jobs if your caight doing one of these things??????????

Yes its wrong. But I would rather see 10 dogs slaughtered then one man’s life RUINED. So what he’s rich.YES THIS IS A SPORT IN SOME AREAS! Just as hunting is a sport.Have you ever watched hunting on sports networks? Do you see these hunters after the kill? How they Hover Over the poor dead animal and hold his antlers ,picking up his now dead head and showing him off to the camera..NOW THATS HORRIBLE… \Cock Fighting is popular in FLORIDA, TEXAS AND ARZ. What did they use to do to horses when they couldnt race anymore??? What is the difference. ??

Our opinions can be different on this subject but the way you guys want Mike Vick to be treated because of this is crazy..Castrate him? JAIL!! Take all his money away? FOR A DOG?? Come on..How many NFL players beat their wives? How many abuse illegal drugs.Drunk Driving.. Lenord Little killed someone. Whats the punishment for these crimes
4 games? But some of you want Vick BANNED from the league?
    Where are our priorities????

  15. Kristin

Wow PREP you are just as ignorant as the next man who doesn’t think anything of this. All these things are wrong that you said… and YES if people get caught they should get in trouble! But dog fighting is not a sport you heartless asshole! AT ALL! and I don’t fucken care how much money michael vick has or if that piece of shit has a family… like I said before he can rot in hell. I hope he gets put in with the pitbulls he trained and tore to fucken pieces then thrown in jail left there to die because we shouldn’t heal his wounds. He was drowning dogs, shooting them, etc… that shit is heartless and I don’t fucken care who you are… Maybe you should get into a church and learn right from wrong, and start refreshing your life. Because this is why the world is the way that it is today. PERIOD! Because people like you are arrogant and ignorant. Remember back in the day if you were guilty of a crime you were hung, or you were disowned… yeah maybe we should go back to the old ways of life… cause we need to rid this world of people like michael vick and if you would like to follow him… we can rid this world of you too. This is not what our society should be coming too. Remember love thy neighbor, half the people on my block don’t know who their neighbors are… thats ridiculous. our world is mean, cruel, inhumane and I am sick of people like yourself condoning the behavior or making it something with race etc. Seriously… you make me sick and your judgement day will come…

  16. Kristin

oh yeah and all these players that beat their wives, drink and drive, etc all the things you said… they should also be ejected from the leauge that they are playing whether it be NFL, MLB, NBA I don’t care. But we need more people out there fighting for the woman that get beat, fighting for the people lost or injured in drinking and driving all of those things, we should have people fighting for those people. But its the comments like you make, who find a way to make it right that these issues are taken more seriously. Like the man that says he hit his wife because she deserved it… I don’t care what your wife does she doesn’t deserve to get beat or belittled by you. (that is not directed at you) I will tell you one thing if my husband ever thought about belittling me, disrespecting me, hitting me, beating me, etc. He wouldn’t be my husband for very long and I would put his ass away for a long time… There are rules set for a reason, laws, etc. Yes not everyone obides by them but if they get caught breaking them, they should be punished. Just as I believe not just sex offenders should be online… EVERYONE and ANYONE with a sexual or violent crime should be on the internet… I would like to know if there is a sexual pretator on my street as much as I would like to know if there was a murderer on my street. Wouldn’t you!?

  17. Prep

“or if that piece of shit has a family… like I said before he can rot in hell. I hope he gets put in with the pitbulls he trained and tore to fucken pieces then thrown in jail left there to die because we shouldn’t heal his wounds”———-This coming from a person that has the nerve to tell me to get into church and learn right from wrong???? Right from wrong?? rot in hell? SO Im wrong for forgiving and your right for condeming a man to hell?

    “Bless and do not curse-God
“Never forget the three powerful resources you always have available to you: love, prayer, and forgiveness.â€?
    -H Jackson Brown Jr
“He who is devoid of the power to forgive, is devoid of the power to love.-DR Martin Luther King Jr

    Kristin you need love

“Remember back in the day if you were guilty of a crime you were hung, or you were disowned”
What crimes are you talking about?? I remember these crimes they were called being black….And if this isnt what your talking about then u believe in capital punishment for all crimes????????????
    Im ignorant??

“if you would like to follow him… we can rid this world of you too”—————————-

so I should die because I believe in love for man over animal???? Again who cares if I have a family, loved ones, fellowship at church, employees that depend on me to feed their families I should just die? Im ignorant?

I think you are ignorant.Very!! You totaly disregarded everything about hunting, horses being killed, bull fighting and cock fighting.. Again Whats the difference? I am not condoning Dog Fighting. I am saying it is an animals instinct to fight. I am saying that Vick should not be condemned to HELL because he allowed animals to act on this instinct? what if he put to lions together and let them fight? Or Maybe he should have just gone into the woods saw a family of Deer and shot their mother.Stood over her with cameras pointing and said “whoa look at these antlers, she’s gonna look good in my den” Then maybe he would have made a late edition of ESPN as Michael Vick “Conquerer of America’s Southern Sport”

  18. Kristin

    Ok PREP

I am sorry, I thought you were saying basically “who cares if he fought dogs its a sport” and that really pissed me off! But reading what you wrote makes more sense thanks for clarifying yourself. I also understand it is dogs instinct to fight, BUT Michael Vick was bringing these dogs up in an inhumane way. Starving them, etc… But what makes me the most mad is that he was hanging them, drowning them, shooting them, and beating them to death if they lost in their fight. I understand its a dogs or any other animals way to fight on instict… but I don’t agree with any animal fighting… EVER!

  19. Prep

Kristin I have one direct question What is the difference between a horse being put down because oflack of performance issues and a dog being killed because he’s injured during a fight ..?
Pitbulls are natural fighters. Thats why they are chosen to fight over other breeds. If they are injured and cant perform
Mike Vick and crew Killed them..But what if he “euthanized” them

Horses are raced because they are natural racers. They dont asked to be raced .They are worked and beat to run faster. They are often injured doing so. And if they cant perform they are killed.. excuse me “euthanized” No not shot or drowned but in my opinion death is death. And there was never any mention of Vick beating a dog to death ..After all how easy is that? Much easier to shoot or drown..So Whats the difference?

Why isnt peta protesting against them..Why arent you out campaigning against these rich Kentucky Derby guys
Nobody ever seems to care about the rights of Horses

SO I ask why is one so so wrong and the other never even a issue..If Vick is wrong they are wrong because in the end both have dead animals..My personal opinion All of these guys are Harming Animals and should be punished but not crucified.I am defending Vick as a man and human because he’s being treated differently from those that kill
Hunters, Race Horse Owners,Bull Fighters,,Cock fighters, all WRONG but Vick is being treated differently

  20. Kristin

I completely agree with you… COMPLETELY… but I never knew about the horse thing to be honest with you… and if I did I would also believe that was wrong. Maybe instead of jail time Vick pays out some decent money to differnt animal groups and humane societies. I don’t know.. I honestly don’t like hunting either… nor would i approve of cock fighting fo bull fighting… I don’t like it at all. I believe that we all eat meat right? which we have been hunting since before time… but i don’t believe in killing whales, zebras etc…. I am not talking to my own uncle because he is going on a safari to kill giraffes and elephants etc… that is discusting to me and its not for the meat its for the kill… that is wrong… so ok, i agree with what you are saying… and your right, if one is punished they should all be punished!!! PERIOD!! We have to draw the line somewhere right?!

  21. 1234567

Michael Vick deserves to die and rot in HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. jen

its impossible to name every inhumae act against an animal. especially in a blog. just like it impossible to name every inhumane act against a person. but a crime is a crime is a crime i dont care who or what its against. last time i checked were all mamals. we all have feelings. and if god gave animals the ability to vocalize in a way humans could understand then maybe things would be different. but they cant object and people dont care. so an english speaking person can kill a japanese, or spanish, or french…pick one. and it doesnt matter because that person couldnt tell them to stop. that hurts. please. i dont think so.
